Songkran Thai New Year’s Day 2009

Thai-New-Year-in-April-Songkran-water festivalThe Thai traditional New Year’s day is coming up, from 13th to 15th April 2009, following the ancient tradition of the water feast. Everybody celebrates these special event throwing water and water guns to each others, just to wish good luck. In addition, as sign of respect, elderly members of the family are given gifts.

The Water Festival, as it is usually called, sees people also praying and offering food to the monks. It is a celebration of Buddhism, representing one of the most important periods for Thailand, and its name, Songkran, cames from the Sanskrit and celebrates the start of the Solar year. The sense of purification is one main point of reference of this traditional feast, so that people go to the temples to bathe the Buddha’s images, and also perfume them.

Actually, the basic essence of the Songkran is its religious nature, even though during the past it has assumed also a more frivolous character, involving all people in the amusing battle of water. The celebrations take place all across Thailand, especially in Th Khao San, where a lot of tourists are mixed with the Thais to follow the tradition all together, whereas the marvellous scenery of Puket offers the release of birds and fish, accompanied by a colourful parade. Also the amazing Bangkok proposes the water fight, even though in a softer way.

And so, what is better than a celebration of the Songkran staying at the luxury and first class hotels in Thailand by Miswaki Travel, with the personalized tour packages?!

If you look for a marvellous holiday in Thailand, in the most charming venues such as Puket, Bangkok, Koh Chang and Chiang Mai, Miswaki Travel offers you all the best of travel in Thailand, among class, tradition and lots of fun!

Bangkok City

hotel bangkok

Similar to its outrageous name, Bangkok city itself could be argued to fit that description. The sprawling metropolis is an exotic paradise for foreigners to get the best deals on shopping or nightlife. The city is infamous for its x rated nightlife which characterizes its open and non-judgmental environment.

By day, the sun warms the city; lighting up the glorious temples and warming up the street sellers to start their long day of work. There is an air of optimism and relaxation as you wander through the streets, recieving free smiles from friendly residents.

Wandering through the streets is a journey in itself; with the street boutiques selling clothes copied straight from Japanese fashion magazines for next to nothing as well as delicious fresh fruit and satay sticks to curb your appetite.

Bangkok malamEverything is within arms reach - it is this that makes Bangkok so endearing to the traveler.

Although highly developed, Bangkok, unlike most cities has retained its cultural charm with small hints of exposed tradition. As I ride in the taxi towards the shopping district, I hear the lunchtime salute to the king on the radio, and almost instantly feel a sense of unity. The thai pride is demonstrated by their determination to keep hold of historical traditions.

I am dropped off at the shopping district and pay the almost ridiculously cheap fare. I am overwhelmed by chaos as soon as I step out of the cab. Tuk tuks ride by at full speed, honking and beeping at the never-ending traffic. A friendly woman stands by the side of the road by her cart making orange juice.

I sample a bottle and am delighted by the fresh flavour. I then head towards the shopping mall. I stand by the Dior and Gucci stalls and am marveled by the beauty of the paradoxical element of Thailand.

Just minutes away you will find street sellers baring their cheap goods by he side of the street.

Although there seems to be so much going on, I feel content and there is a strangely relaxing attitude in the air. There seems to be absolutely no pressure and no obligations, it is an incredibly mystifying place. The locals themselves also appear to be completely at ease.

Bangkok is a magical place, full of beauty and choice. There is an abundance of things to do, whether it be to visit the traditional temples, take a ride on the Chao praya river, witness a boxing show, relax and have a thai massage or score bargains at the shopping outlets, Bangkok really has it all.
